--Labour minister: Expect report on EY employee death case in 10 days
NEW DELHI – The government expects the report on the investigation into the death of an Ernst & Young employee in Pune, reportedly due to excessive workload, in the next seven to 10 days, Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said today.
"We have sought a report from the state authorities. We'll have to look at the post-mortem report, the police investigation report, before we can say more," the minister said at a press conference.
The Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje said last week that the government has taken up the complaint on the issue, and a "thorough investigation into the allegations of an unsafe and exploitative work environment is underway".
The National Human Rights Commission on Saturday took suo motu cognisance of the death of the chartered accountant in Pune. The National Human Rights Commission also issued a notice to the labour ministry asking for a report within four weeks.
Mandaviya said that the government will take "whatever action needs to be taken" based on the investigation findings.
EY India Chairman and Managing Director Rajiv Memani last week said he regrets missing the employee's funeral. Memani said he will "personally champion" the well-being of his employees.
Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old chartered accountant working with S R Batliboi, a member firm of EY Global, passed away in July. In a letter after her death, Anna's mother said work pressure took a toll on her daughter's health physically and mentally. End
