--AAP's Atishi takes oath as Delhi chief minister
NEW DELHI – Aam Aadmi Party's Atishi today took oath as the chief minister of Delhi, days after Arvind Kejriwal resigned from the position. Atishi is the youngest chief minister of Delhi, and is only the third woman to hold the office.
President Droupadi Murmu appointed Atishi as the chief minister of the National Capital Territory of Delhi late Friday, along with five Cabinet ministers. The Cabinet ministers--Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, Imran Hussain, and Mukesh Ahlawat--also took oath today.
Prior to being chosen as the chief minister, Atishi had held multiple portfolios, including finance and education, as a Cabinet minister.
AAP's legislators chose Atishi as the leader of its legislative wing on Tuesday, after Kejriwal had announced he would step down as Delhi chief minister. The Supreme Court last week granted Kejriwal interim bail in the Delhi liquor policy case, which is being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The apex court said at the time that Kejriwal will not visit the office of the chief minister and the Delhi Secretariat, and will not sign official files unless necessary and will have to obtain the lieutenant governor's approval for the same.
While announcing his resignation, Kejriwal had also said he would demand early elections for Delhi. Kejriwal claimed that he would accept the chief minister's post only if the people of Delhi certified his honesty in the Assembly elections. Kejriwal has been the chief minister of Delhi since 2015 after winning two consecutive terms.
The current term of the Delhi Assembly ends on Feb 11, and the elections for the 70-member Assembly are likely to be held late January or early February. The Aam Aadmi Party won 62 seats in the last Assembly polls in Delhi in February 2020, and 67 seats in 2015 elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party won only 8 and 3 seats in the previous two elections.
