MUMBAI – India and Brazil agreed on a joint collaborative action to resolve major hurdles to the production and use of sustainable aviation fuels by leveraging their existing ethanol and biodiesel production infrastructure, the government said in a release today. Both countries are part of the Global Biofuels Alliance initiated by India in September last year.
"India and Brazil, as two leading biofuel producers, are well-positioned to collaborate on production and use of sustainable aviation fuels, by leveraging their existing ethanol and biodiesel production infrastructure, growing aviation market and vast feedstock potential, including their agricultural resources," the government said.
Hardeep Puri, minister of petroleum and natural gas, along with representatives of the upstream and downstream sectors of the Indian oil and gas companies, are on an official visit to Brazil from Thursday till today, on the invitation of Alexandre Silveira, Brazil's minister of mines and energy.
Initiated by India and eight other countries, including the US and Brazil, the Global Biofuels Alliance aims to increase the use of sustainable biofuels, and cleaner and more climate-friendly alternatives to fossil fuels.
The two countries noted that sustainable aviation fuel is currently the only viable pathway to decarbonise the aviation sector. Sustainable aviation fuels account for 0.3% of the current fuel used for aviation, according to the release.
The two sides agreed to collaborate further to resolve some hurdles to production of sustainable aviation fuel such as feedstock-related challenges, high cost compared to other technologies, infrastructure for large-scale production and efficient waste management systems, and low maturity of production pathways, the government said.
The two countries agreed on promoting technology exchange, joint research, and development initiatives in order to optimise the production process of sustainable aviation fuel.
India and Brazil will share regulatory and policy experience, with a view to creating frameworks that encourage investment in the production of sustainable aviation fuel, along with cooperating in research, development, and innovation to enhance the technology readiness level of production pathways. The countries will also collaborate in multilateral forums such as the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, to promote the development of sustainable aviation fuel, the release stated.
India and Brazil reaffirmed their desire to strengthen cooperation between them to usher in economic growth by creating jobs in the rural sector, and fostering innovation in renewable energy technologies and energy security, by reducing reliance on imports, the release said. The bilateral cooperation in sustainable aviation fuel production will contribute to global efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation, it said. End
