NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court of India's YouTube channel was taken down today after it was hacked and showed video promoting a crypto currency developed by US-based company Ripple Labs.
"This is to inform all concerned that the YouTube channel of Supreme Court of India has been taken down. The services on YouTube channel of Supreme Court of India will be resumed shortly," Supreme Court Registrar (Technology) Hargurvarinder Singh Jaggi said in a notice.
A blank video with the title "Brad Garlinghouse: Ripple Responds To The SEC's $2 Billion Fine! XRP PRICE PREDICTION" was live on the YouTube channel of the apex court today. The apex court has been using YouTube to stream live hearings of public interest matters and cases listed before Constitution benches.
In a unanimous decision taken by the full court meeting headed by then Chief Justice U.U. Lalit in September 2022, the Supreme Court decided to live-stream proceedings of all Constitution bench hearings following a path-breaking verdict on the matter in 2018.
In 2018, a bench of then chief justice of India Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud held that live-streaming of its proceedings would help those even in distant places to witness court proceedings. End
