HYDERABAD – Public sector iron ore major NMDC Ltd plans to capitalise on its research and development expertise by offering commercial-scale consultancy services to other companies in the mining and minerals sector, Director (technical) Vinay Kumar told Informist.

NMDC has a dedicated R&D division in Hyderabad. In recent years, the company has invested around 2 bln rupees to upgrade its infrastructure as part of its strategy to offer consultancy services on a commercial basis. While the financial benefits of the move are yet to be determined, the aim is to use its advanced infrastructure and labs to contribute expertise to the sector, Kumar said.

The R&D division will advise and assist mining and mineral companies in identifying mineral values and developing sustainable practices in manufacturing, such as beneficiation, zero-waste management, creating by-products, and reducing carbon emissions.

Kumar said that some of the biggest players in the mining and mineral industry, including Steel Authority of India Ltd, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, and Larsen & Toubro Ltd, seek advanced solutions for beneficiation and pelletisation.

In addition to iron ore and steel, NMDC's R&D division is playing a crucial role in resource conservation, zero-waste technology, and research in critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, coal, bauxite, and rare earth minerals, the official said. The division has also helped NMDC Steel Ltd produce sustainable steel, and it is working with IIT-Madras and the JSW group in developing dry beneficiation for upgrading low-grade iron ore.

Recent work by NMDC's R&D division on coal and coke characterisation, focusing on key properties such as fluidity, swelling, and coke behaviour under blast furnace conditions is helping the steel industry reduce dependence on imported coking coal, Kumar said.

At 1438 IST, shares of NMDC were at 212.87 rupees on the National Stock Exchange, up 0.2% from the previous close.  End
