MUMBAI – Indian telecom operators net lost 922,375 wireless telecom subscribers in July, compared with 1.57 mln mobile subscribers added in June, according to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, Bharti Airtel Ltd, and Vodafone Idea Ltd lost customers in July, while the government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd added users.
Reliance Jio, India's largest mobile telecom operator, net lost 758,463 users in July, compared with an addition of 1.91 mln users in June. Bharti Airtel net lost 1.69 mln users in July, as against the 1.25 mln users it added in the previous month. Vodafone Idea's net loss in customers accelerated sequentially, with the company losing 1.41 mln customers in July, compared to 860,889 users lost in June.
Compared with the loss of users reported by private operators, government-owned BSNL net added 2.93 mln subscribers in July, compared with the 745,450 users it lost in June, according to data from TRAI.
Reliance Jio Infocomm had 40.68% share of the wireless telecom market, in terms of the number of subscribers. Bharti Airtel followed with a market share of 33.12%, while Vodafone Idea's market share in July was 18.46%. The market shares of all the telecom players were largely flat in July on a month-on-month basis. As of Jul 31, private players controlled 92.25% of the market, while the rest was serviced by government-owned players, namely BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.

ACTIVE SUBSCRIBERS
Of the 1.17 bln wireless subscribers in India in July, around 1.06 bln were active, according to TRAI's peak visitor location register, or VLR. TRAI's VLR register is used to measure active subscribers, including those roaming on a mobile phone operator's network. As was the case in June, Bharti Airtel topped the visitor location register data for July at 99.05%, followed by Reliance Jio at 92.64%. Vodafone Idea was third at 85.80%.

BROADBAND USERS
According to TRAI's data, gathered from 1,248 operators, India's broadband subscribers' base increased 0.6% month-on-month in July to 946.19 mln. Reliance Jio had 51.6% of all broadband subscribers in July, followed by Bharti Airtel at 30.0%, Vodafone Idea at 13.4%, and BSNL at 3.1%. Among wireless broadband providers, Reliance Jio had a subscriber base of 475.77 mln in July, followed by Bharti Airtel at 275.88 mln. End
