NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet today approved a total outlay of 791.56 bln rupees for the government's tribal welfare scheme – Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan – to improve the socio-economic condition of tribal communities in the country. The scheme was announced in the Budget for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar).

The scheme, covering around 63,000 villages and over 50 mln tribal people, will improve the socio-economic condition of tribal communities by adopting saturation coverage for tribal families in tribal-majority villages and aspirational districts, an official release said.

The scheme will cover 549 districts and 2,740 blocks spread across all tribal majority villages across 30 states and union territories, the release said.

The share of the central government in the scheme, to be implemented by 17 ministries, will be 563.33 bln rupees and the share of states will be 228.23 bln rupees.

The aims of the scheme include building proper houses, improving village infrastructure, imparting skill development, and improving education and health facilities. Many of these aims will be met using existing central government schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Skill India Mission, National Health Mission and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.  End
