Polling underway for 24 Assembly seats in first phase of J&K polls

NEW DELHI – Polling in the first phase of the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections started at 0700 IST today in 24 constituencies across seven districts. A total of 219 candidates are in the fray in this phase, with about 2.3 mln voters – 1,176,462 male, 1,151,058 female and 60 of a third gender, according to the poll panel.
The constituencies covered in this phase are Pampore, Tral, Pulwama, Rajpora, Zainapora, Shopian, DH Pora, Kulgam, Devsar, Dooru, Kokernag, Anantnag West, Anantnag, Srigufwara-Bijbehara, Shangus-Anantnag East, Pahalgam, Inderwal, Kishtwar, Padder-Nagseni, Bhadarwah, Doda, Doda West, Ramban, and Banihal.
A total of 14,000 polling staff have been deputed to oversee elections at the 3,276 polling stations. The day-long polling is scheduled to end at 1800 IST.
This is the first election in the Union territory after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
The second phase of polling in the Union territory will be held on Sep 25 and the third on Oct 1, with the results to be declared on Oct 8.
Prominent candidates in the first phase include the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, Congress general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir, the National Conference's Sakina Itoo, the People's Democratic Party's Sartaj Madni and Abdul Rehman Veeri and the Bharatiya Janata Party's Sofi Mohammad Yousuf.
