NEW DELHI - Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today tendered his resignation to Lieutenant Governor of Delhi V.K. Saxena. Delhi Education and Finance Minister Atishi Marlena has staked the claim to form the next government in the city-state.

Earlier today, the Aam Aadmi Party legislators elected Atishi as the leader of its legislative wing, paving the way for her to stake claim to form the government. “Many, Many good wishes to Atishiji,” Kejriwal wrote on the social media platform X.

In a surprise move on Sunday, Kejriwal announced his decision to resign on Sunday. Kejriwal, who was in jail for almost six months in connection with alleged corruption in Delhi liquor policy, was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Friday.

While announcing his resignation, Kejriwal also said he would demand early elections for Delhi. Kejriwal claimed that he would accept the chief minister's post only if the people of Delhi certified his honesty in the assembly elections. Kejriwal has been the chief minister of Delhi since 2015 after winning two consecutive terms.

The current term of the Delhi Assembly ends on Feb 11, and the elections for the 70-member assembly are likely to be held around late January or early February.

The Aam Aadmi Party won 62 seats in the last assembly polls in Delhi in February 2020 and 67 seats in 2015  elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party could win only 8 and 3 seats in the previous two elections.

The Supreme Court, which granted bail, ruled that Kejriwal should not visit the office of the chief minister and the Delhi Secretariat, and should not sign official files unless necessary.  End
