NEW DELHI – The government will "very soon" begin the process of conducting the next decadal census, which has been on hold since the COVID-19 pandemic, Home Minister Amit Shah said today.
India has conducted the population census every decade since 1881, but the census for 2021 was delayed because of the pandemic. Currently, most data sets and government schemes are based on the last population census released in 2011.
Last month, media reports said the government is likely to begin conducting the long-delayed population census this month and the ministries of home affairs and statistics and programme implementation will be working on the plan.
In the absence of fresh data, the government and regulators are still making policies and allocations based on the 2011 census, which is dated.
The newly formed 16th Finance Commission will need to use the census to determine the vertical and horizontal devolution of taxes to states for five years beginning 2026-27 (Apr-Mar). The terms of reference for the panel, headed by Arvind Panagariya, did not mention a census year which will form the basis for the commission's recommendations. The 16th Finance Commission will submit its report by Oct 31, 2025. End
