MUMBAI – India's domestic airlines carried 13.1 mln passengers in August, up 5.7% from 12.4 mln passengers in the same month last year, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said in a press release. In Jan-Aug, domestic airlines carried 105.47 mln passengers, up 4.8% compared with 100.6 mln in the year-ago period.


Only three airlines – Indigo, Air India, and Vistara – increased their market share in August. The market share of Indigo, India's largest airline, rose to 62.4% in August, up 40 basis points from 62% in July. The Tata Group-owned Air India's market share rose to 14.7% in August from 14.3% in July. Vistara's market share rose to 10.3% last month from 10% in July. SpiceJet's market share fell to 2.3% in August from 3.1% in July, while Akasa Air's market share fell to 4.5% in August from 4.7% in July. 

 

In August, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India, Akasa Air, and Vistara, all saw a decline in passenger load factor from the previous month. In August, the passenger load factor, which shows capacity utilisation, was the highest for Vistara at 88.7%, followed by Akasa Air at 85.5%.

 

The passenger load factor of Indigo declined to 82.3% in August from 84.6% the previous month, that of Vistara fell to 88.7% in August from 90% in July, and that of SpiceJet was down at 81% compared to 90.3% the previous month. The passenger load factor of Air India dropped to 80.1% in August from 82.2% a month ago, while that of Akasa Air declined to 85.5% in August from 86.4%.

 

Across the four metros, Akasa Air reported the highest on-time performance of 71.2% in August, followed by Vistara at 68.6% and AIX Connect at 66.8%. Indigo and Air India reported the same on-time performance at 66%. Alliance Air and SpiceJet recorded the least on-time performance of 55.3% and 31%, respectively.

 

The flight cancellation rate for domestic airlines in August was 0.83%, according to the DGCA release. Among major players, Alliance Air reported the highest cancellation rate of 4.92%, followed by SpiceJet at 2.57%. Indigo reported a cancellation rate of 0.64%, Air India 0.21%, Akasa Air 0.19%, and Vistara recorded the lowest of 0.17%.

 

A total of 1,031 passenger complaints were received by domestic airlines in August, the regulator said. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried in August was around 0.79. Flight-related problems accounted for 43.1% of the total passenger complaints.

 

Today, shares of Interglobe Aviation closed at 4,942.35 rupees on the National Stock Exchange, down 1.1%. On BSE, shares of SpiceJet closed at 71.66 rupees, up 8%.  End
