India rains 18% below normal today, 8% above normal since Jun 1

--IMD: India Sep 13 rainfall 4.7 mm, 18% below normal 

--IMD: India Jun 1-Sep 13 rainfall 849.3 mm, 8% above normal 

 

Mumbai – India received 4.7 mm rainfall today, 18% below the normal of 5.7 mm, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 849.3 mm of rainfall, 8% above the normal of 784.3 mm for the period, it said.

 

Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, three regions received below normal showers today and one region received above normal showers. Rainfall was 89% below normal at 1.2 mm in east and northeast India and the southern peninsula received 87% below normal rains at 0.6 mm. Northwest India received a whopping 228% above normal rains at 12.1 mm while central India received 69% below normal showers at 1.9 mm.

 

The weather department said parts of Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall till Saturday due to a well-marked low pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal. Similar weather conditions are very likely over parts of Jharkhand during the weekend.

 

The weather system is likely to intensify into a depression over coastal West Bengal and the adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by Saturday, the weather bureau said.

 

Isolated very heavy rainfall is very likely over east Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday and Chhattisgarh on Monday, the weather agency said. Next week, scattered light to moderate rainfall is very likely over Vidarbha, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat state, it said.  

 

So far, rainfall has been normal in 16 of the 36 subdivisions. Rainfall was "excess" in 13, and "deficient" in five subdivisions, it said. Rainfall has been "large excess" in two subdivisions.  End
