--Govt extends duty-free import of yellow peas till Dec 31

--CONTEXT: Duty-free import of yellow peas earlier allowed till Oct 31

MUMBAI – The government today extended the duty waiver on imports of yellow peas for three months till Dec 31, the Director General of Foreign Trade said in a notification. The duty waiver on imports was previously allowed till Oct 31.

The import of yellow peas is free without the minimum import price condition and port restrictions, subject to registration under the online Import Monitoring System, the notification said. This will be applicable on all consignments where the bill of landing is issued on or before Dec 31, it said.

Amid rising prices of tur and chana, the government allowed free imports of yellow peas in December. Yellow pea is a substitute for both tur and chana.

Currently, prices of tur and chana have remained in range-bound with downward bias due to an excess supply of yellow peas in the domestic markets, traders said. Further, prospects of a good crop during the current kharif season have also weighed on tur prices.  End
