NEW DELHI – The statistics ministry will conduct the eighth Economic Census in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) and is likely to release its results in 2026, an official in the ministry said. The ministry has already held meetings with government departments and state governments regarding the census and is now seeking suggestions from the industry, the official said.
The government is planning the next Economic Census even as the results of the seventh round are yet to be made public. "We had used an external agency for the seventh Economic Census, so there are concerns over the data quality," the official said on the condition of anonymity.
"Some states have already given their approval for the results of the seventh round, but a large number of them are yet to give the go ahead," the official said. "It is difficult to say if the results of the seventh Economic Census will ever be made public."
Economic Census, which is generally held every five to seven years, is aimed at detailing the total count of establishments across formal and informal sectors, capturing critical parameters such as economic activity and ownership patterns, according to a government release.
A steering committee, chaired by Statistics Secretary Saurabh Gar, will oversee the coordination of the Economic Census. The steering committee will be assisted by an expert group on technical matters. End
