Extremely heavy rain over Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal till Saturday, says IMD

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department said parts of Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall till Saturday due to a well-marked low pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal. Similar weather conditions are very likely over parts of Jharkhand during the weekend, the weather bureau said.

 

The weather system is likely to intensify into a depression over coastal West Bengal and the adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by Saturday, the weather department said. 

 

Strong winds of 30-40 kmph and gusting to 50 kmph are likely to prevail over coastal areas of Bangladesh, West Bengal, and adjoining the northern Bay of Bengal today, the weather bureau said. The speed is likely to increase to 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph from Saturday evening and is likely to continue till Sunday, it said. Meanwhile, winds of 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph over the northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off West Bengal and Odisha coasts from Saturday evening are likely to continue till Monday morning.

 

Isolated very heavy rainfall is very likely over east Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday and Chhattisgarh on Monday, the weather agency said. During the next week, scattered light to moderate rainfall is very likely over Vidarbha, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat state, it said.  

 

The depression over central Uttar Pradesh weakened into a well-marked low pressure area over northwest Uttar Pradesh and neighbourhoods on Thursday, the Met department said. The weather system is likely to weaken into a low pressure area during the next 12 hours, it said.  

 

Under the influence of the above weather system, parts of Uttarakhand are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall today, the weather bureau said. The rest of Uttarakhand and parts of west Uttar Pradesh are likely to receive very heavy rainfall today, it said.   

 

So far during the southwest monsoon, the country has received 8?ove normal showers at 849.3 mm, according to the data from the India Meteorological Department.  End
