MUMBAI – Overall vehicle despatches to dealerships in India rose slightly over 7% on year to 2.13 mln units in August, and exports were up nearly 14% on year at 433,771 units, according to data released today by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. The overall vehicle sales volume was driven by healthy growth in two- and three-wheeler despatches on anticipation of strong demand during festivals.

In August, two-wheeler despatches rose slightly over 9% on year to 1.71 mln units and three-wheeler despatches increased by nearly 8% on year to 69,962 units, according to the data. However, passenger vehicle sales, including those of Tata Motors Ltd, fell nearly 2% on year to 352,921 units, and quadricycle despatches plummeted to 6 units from 110 units in August last year.

On the outlook for the short- and medium-term, SIAM President Vinod Aggarwal said, "As the country enters the festive season, demand for vehicles is expected to grow, which will also be duly augmented by the recent announcements of PM E-Drive and PM-eBus Sewa schemes of the government."

In the two-wheeler category, motorcycles continued to account for a major portion of the total despatches in August. Wholesale sales of motorcycles rose slightly over 8% on year to 1.06 mln units, and those of scooters increased by 10.4% to 606,250 units. Sales of mopeds surged 22% on year to 44,546 units.

In August, sales of three-wheelers were driven by passenger carrier despatches, which rose nearly 12% on year to 58,698 units. In comparison, sales of goods carriers fell 7.6% on year to 8,434 units and those of electric rickshaws fell nearly 15% on year to 2,655 units. Sales of electric carts also fell 12% on year to 175 units during the month.

Among passenger vehicles, a decline in sales of entry-level cars and vans weighed on overall segment despatches. Sales of passenger cars dropped 19% on year to 97,198 units with all automakers reporting a decline in sales over the year-ago period. During the month, despatches of vans fell 7.4% on year to 10,985 units. However, sales of utility vehicles rose slightly over 10% on year to 200,596 units led by growth in despatches of Maruti Suzuki India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Kia Motors.

Passenger vehicle inventory reached alarming levels in August, with stock days stretching to 70–75 days against the ideal inventory of 30-35 days. Even with the onset of the festival season, retail sales of the segment remained under strain due to customers delaying purchases, poor consumer sentiment, and persistent heavy rains.

In August, the automobile industry reported strong growth in exports. Despatches of passenger vehicles rose slightly over 3% on year to 66,008 units last month and two-wheeler sales rose 16% to 338,608 units. Meanwhile, exports of three-wheelers were up slightly over 11% on year at 28,873 units.

On the vehicle production front, the industry reported a growth of 4.4% on year in total output to 2.49 mln units. The production of three-wheelers grew by 9% on year to 103,526 units, and those of two-wheelers was up nearly 5% at 2.01 mln units. By comparison, production of passenger vehicles grew marginally on year to 376,726 units in August.
