MUMBAI – The main objective of "Mission Mausam" scheme is to strengthen components of the earth system observations and get a better understanding of data science, innovation, and technology, M. Ravichandran, secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, said at a press conference in New Delhi today.

As part of this mission, the ministry will concentrate on improving the current weather forecasting model and provide accurate and timely weather information. The initiative will also integrate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning into weather forecasting.

The initiative will work on improving the existing weather forecasting models, while also increasing the number of radars and wind profilers. However, there are no new additions. The mission's aim is to reduce the error margin of the forecast by increasing the number of observations, the secretary said. The initiative also aims to improve the communication channel by entering through social media platforms and developing a mobile app.

Currently, the India Meteorological Department gives NOWCAST every six hours, but the mission aims to increase the frequency of NOWCAST to every one to five hours, the secretary said. The initiative will focus on improving observations and understanding by providing highly accurate and timely weather and climate information across temporal and spatial scales, including monsoon forecasts, alerts for air quality, extreme weather events, and cyclones and other related issues.

The Ministry of Earth Science will work along with the India Meteorological Department, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting.

The Union Cabinet approved an outlay of 20 bln rupees for the mission on Wednesday, to boost the country's weather and climate-related science, research, and services.  End
