NEW DELHI – The Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association, also called ISMA, signed a memorandum of understanding with The Energy and Resources Institute and Praj Industries Ltd to collaborate on sustainable aviation fuel production and deployment, aligning with the government’s sustainability goals, ISMA said in a release today.
The collaboration will promote knowledge sharing, policy advocacy, and capacity building for industry-government partnership, the release said. Aimed at building a bio-economy and low-carbon energy infrastructure, the MOU will also explore the potential in other green fuels--ethanol, biogas, green bio-hydrogen, and green methanol, it added.
India has set an initial indicative target of blending 1% sustainable aviation fuel with aviation turbine fuel for international flights by 2027 and 5% by 2030.
"By virtue of our collaboration, we will leverage the research and policy expertise of TERI and the technology solutions of PRAJ to negate such challenges and build a robust bioenergy ecosystem," ISMA Director General Deepak Ballani said in the release. Unlike conventional jet fuels, sustainable aviation fuel produced from renewable resources can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, he added.
The aviation industry annually accounts for 1 bln tn, or 3% of global carbon emissions, pressing the necessity for an alternative to traditional jet fuel, ISMA said. The premiere sugar association suggested that the country "can once again resort to the sugarcane industry, specifically bagasse," as a feedstock for producing sustainable aviation fuel due to abundant availability and cost-effective technological feasibility. Bagasse, a by-product of sugar is a fibrous residue left over after crushing sugarcane stalks to extract juice.
Shares of Praj Industries today closed 0.8% higher at 722 rupees on the National Stock Exchange. End
