NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet today approved extending the health coverage benefits under the Ayushman Bharat scheme to all senior citizens aged 70 years and above, regardless of their income levels. The Cabinet approved an outlay of 34.37 bln rupees for this, Ashwini Vaishnaw, minister of information and broadcasting, said at a press conference.
The move will benefit around 45 mln families with 60 mln senior citizens by providing free health insurance cover of 500,000 rupees on a family basis, Vaishnaw said. Currently, 123 mln families benefit from the scheme.
"The senior citizens of the age 70 years and above belonging to families already covered under AB PM-JAY (Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana) will get an additional top-up cover upto 5 lakh (500,000 rupees) per year for themselves," the government said in a press release.
"All other senior citizens of the age 70 years and above will get a cover upto 5 lakh (500,000 rupees) per year on a family basis."
Ayushman Bharat Yojana is a national public health insurance scheme of the government that aims to provide free access to health insurance coverage for low income earners in the country. It was launched in September 2018 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The scheme provides health insurance coverage of up to 500,000 rupees annually for families covered under the scheme.
