India rains 67% above normal today, 8% above normal since Jun 1

--IMD: India Sep 11 rainfall 9.8 mm, 67% above normal

--IMD: India Jun 1-Sep 11 rainfall 836.7 mm, 8% above normal 

 

MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 9.8 mm, 67% above the normal of 5.9 mm, the Indian Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 836.7 mm rainfall, 8% above the normal of 772.5 mm for the period, it said.

 

Two of the four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers today and two regions received above normal showers. Rainfall was 27% below normal at 7.5 mm in east and northeast India. The southern peninsula received 61% below normal rains at 2.0 mm today. Northwest India received 72% above normal showers today at 6.7 mm and central India received a whopping 196% above normal showers at 18.3 mm today.

 

Though the south peninsular has received below normal showers today, rainfall in the region so far is 25% above the long period average at 763.1 mm, the data showed. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, coastal Karnataka, south interior Karnataka, and Lakshadweep have received excess rainfall so far during the southwest monsoon. 

 

However, it is not the same case with east and northeast India, as this is the only homogeneous region which has received below normal showers so far. Precipitation in the region was 1,007.1 mm, which is 16% below the normal of 1,192.6 mm, the data showed. Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh, which fall in east and northeast India, have received deficient rainfall since June 1.    

 

So far in the season, rainfall has been normal in 17 of the 36 sub-divisions. Rainfall was "excess" in 12, and "deficient" in five sub-divisions, it said. Rainfall has been "large excess" in two sub-divisions.  End
