MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department issued red alerts for Madhya Pradesh and west Uttar Pradesh today due to likely extremely heavy rainfall under the influence of a depression over northeast Madhya Pradesh. The weather bureau has also issued orange alerts for Gujarat, east Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and east Uttar Pradesh and said these regions are likely to get heavy to very heavy rainfall.

The weather bureau said strong winds with a speed of 30-40 kmph, gusting to 50 kmph, are likely over north Madhya Pradesh and adjoining south Uttar Pradesh during the next 24 hours.

A red alert indicates very heavy rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours and an orange alert is for heavy rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm.

The depression over northeast Madhya Pradesh is likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall over Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during the next three days, the weather department said. Widespread light to moderate rainfall is very likely over central India, Konkan and Goa, and Gujarat, while scattered light or moderate rainfall is very likely over central Maharashtra, Marathwada, Saurashtra, and Kutch during the week, it said.

In view of the above weather patterns, the weather department said there is a risk of moderate to high flash flooding over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of west Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours. The bureau has urged farmers to make provision for draining excess water from crop fields to avoid water stagnation in places of heavy rainfall over the next few days.

The weather bureau has also predicted very heavy rainfall over parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal during the remaining days of the week.

During the last 24 hours, a few parts of Madhya Pradesh received extremely heavy rainfall and parts of Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Gujarat received heavy to very heavy rainfall, the wether bureau said.   End
