NEW DELHI – The government is working on creating a nationwide 'suspect registry' of cyber criminals in collaboration with banks and financial intermediaries to strengthen fraud risk management capabilities of the financial ecosystem. The government will also set up a special wing of 'cyber commandos' to counter cyber-security threats in the country.
"Around five thousand cyber commandos will be prepared in five years," the Ministry of Home Affairs said.
Home Minister Amit Shah today said that in a vast country like India, having a separate cyber suspect registry for each state would not serve any purpose because states have their own boundaries. "It was the need of the hour to create a suspect registry at the national level and connect states with it to create a common platform to fight cyber-crimes," Shah said, adding that this initiative would help in preventing cyber-crimes in the coming days.
The home minister was addressing the first foundation day programme of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre in New Delhi. He dedicated the Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre to the nation and launched the Samanvay platform (Joint Cyber Crime Investigation Facility System). Shah also inaugurated the 'cyber commandos' programme and suspect registry.
A cyber fraud mitigation Centre has been established at the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre in New Delhi with representatives from major banks, financial intermediaries, payment aggregators, telecom service providers, IT intermediaries, law enforcement agencies from states and Union territories. "They will work together for immediate action and seamless cooperation to tackle online financial crimes," the ministry said. End
