NEW DELHI – Parts of Madhya Pradesh are expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next couple of days under the influence of a depression over north Chhattisgarh, the India Meteorological Department said.

The depression over north Chhattisgarh and adjoining interior Odisha is likely to weaken into a well-marked low pressure area over Chhattisgarh and adjoining east Madhya Pradesh around this evening, the weather agency said in a report. However, there is a possibility of re-intensification of the weather system into a depression around Wednesday evening over central parts of north Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Uttar Pradesh.

In central India, extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over east Madhya Pradesh today and over western parts of the state on Wednesday. Very heavy rainfall is also expected over interior parts of Gujarat and Chhattisgarh today, the bureau said. It forecasts extremely heavy rainfall over a region when there is a possibility of the particular region receiving 244.5 mm of precipitation or more within a span of 24 hours. Similarly, for very heavy rainfall, precipitation ranges between 124.5 mm and 244.5 mm, according to the department.

Heavy rainfall is very likely over Madhya Pradesh during the next seven days, Vidarbha, Konkan, Goa and the Ghat areas of central Maharashtra till Wednesday and Chhattisgarh during Sat-Mon.

The bureau said winds with a maximum speed of 60 km per hour are likely over north Chhattisgarh today, and the intensity is expected to gradually decrease thereafter.

The weather bureau also advised farmers to drain out excess water from rice, finger millet, maize and groundnut crop fields in Odisha, and from rice, maize, sugarcane and other crop fields in Chhattisgarh. In Madhya Pradesh, farmers have been advised to drain excess water from maize, cotton, soybean, pulses and vegetable fields.  End
