NEW DELHI – Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge today slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "abject failure" to end the violence in Manipur. Kharge termed the prime minister's failure as "unforgivable". The violence triggered in May last year between ethnic groups, Meiteis and Kukis, has further escalated with drones and rockets being used for attacks over the past week.

"People of Manipur are asking, why Modi ji doesn't want to end violence in the state," Kharge said, adding that the prime minister didn't visit the violence-hit state for once in the past 16 months, even as violence continues unabated. The Congress party demanded the dismissal of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and that the Centre "must take full responsibility of the sensitive security situation".

Attacking Home Minister Amit Shah, Kharge said that it looks like the home minister has also given up on his Constitutional responsibility to ensure security in Manipur, and is busy politicking and addressing rallies in election-going states. "Drone and rocket-propelled grenade attacks have begun, and this is now turning out to be a National Security threat. In such a serious situation, BJP seems to enact a resignation drama," the Congress president said.

Kharge appealed for a massive crackdown on all kinds of insurgent groups, with the help of the state forces. The Congress party also demanded that the Supreme Court-mandated and monitored Manipur Commission of Inquiry into ethnic violence must expedite its investigation. "The Modi government must not misuse Central Bureau of Investigation, National Investigating Agency and other agencies investigating the violence. Attempts to foster peace and normalcy must start immediately by taking all political parties, representatives and civil society member of every community on board," Kharge said.  End
