NEW DELHI – The health ministry confirmed in a release today that the previously suspected case of Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, found in the country was a travel-related infection and not part of the current public health emergency around the globe.
"Laboratory testing has confirmed the presence of Mpox virus of West African clade 2 in the patient," the ministry said. "This case is an isolated case, similar to the earlier 30 cases reported in India from July 2022 onwards, and is not a part of the current public health emergency (reported by the World Health Organization) which is regarding clade 1 of Mpox."
The individual, a young male, recently travelled from a country experiencing Mpox transmission and is currently isolated at a designated tertiary care isolation facility, the ministry said in the release. "The patient remains clinically stable and is without any systemic illness or comorbidities," it said. "Public health measures, including contact tracing and monitoring, are actively in place to ensure the situation is contained. There is no indication of any widespread risk to the public at this time."
Mpox is a zoonotic disease that occurs primarily in tropical rainforest areas of Central and West Africa. The infection can be transmitted from animals to humans, and from humans to humans as well. Its symptoms last two to four weeks. The case fatality rate for this infection varies from 1-10%.
The WHO had declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern in July 2022 and revoked the status in May 2023. In August, it again declared Mpox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. End
