India Apr-Aug major ports' freight traffic up 4.9% on year

AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major ports in the country rose 4.9% on year to 348.10 mln tn in Apr-Aug, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed.
This rise was mainly driven by other miscellaneous cargo, which rose 23.1% on year to 42.90 mln tn. Crude and petroleum products cargo, which account for nearly one-third of total cargo handled at all the major ports across the country, rose 1.7% on year to 102.39 mln tn in Apr-Aug. Container traffic increased 4.8% on year to 79.26 mln tn and thermal coal cargo rose 6.6% on year to 55.47 mln tn.
Coking coal volume fell 0.8% on year to 25.29 mln tn and iron ore volume declined 0.3% on year to 21.95 mln tn in Apr-Aug.
Among ports, Paradip handled the highest traffic in Apr-Aug at 62.59 mln tn, followed by Deendayal port at 59.33 mln tn and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 37.42 mln tn.
