India rainfall 7% below normal today, 8% above normal since Jun 1

--IMD: India Sep 5 rainfall 6.4 mm, 7% below normal 

--IMD: India Jun 1-Sep 5 rainfall 792.5 mm, 8% above normal 

 

MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 6.4 mm, 7% below the normal of 6.9 mm, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 792.5 mm rainfall, 8% above the normal of 734.8 mm for the period, it said.

 

Two of the four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers today, while the other three received above normal rain. Rainfall was 17% below normal at 8.8 mm in east and northeast India. It was 23% above normal in northwest India at 6.7 mm and 10% above normal in the south peninsula India at 5.4 mm, while rainfall in central India was 26% below normal at 6.9 mm today.

 

Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring areas at lower and middle tropospheric levels, heavy rainfall is very likely over Kerala and Mahe from Sunday to Wednesday, Telangana till Wednesday, and coastal Karnataka till Monday, the weather bureau said. The department sees moderate risk of flash flood over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand till Friday.

 

It has also forecast very heavy to heavy rainfall over parts of east and northeast India. Arunachal Pradesh is likely to receive very heavy rainfall today, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to receive very heavy showers on Wednesday, and Odisha is likely to see similar weather conditions over the weekend, it said. 

 

So far in the season, rainfall has been normal in 17 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in 12, and "deficient" in five sub-divisions, it said. Two sub-divisions received "large excess" rainfall. End
