Govt starts retail sale of onion at 35 rupees per kg in Delhi, Mumbai

NEW DELHI – The government today began retail sales of onions at 35 rupees per kg in Delhi and Mumbai by flagging off mobile vans of the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India.
"The event marked the commencement of calibrated and targeted release of onion from the government buffer to make the essential vegetable available to consumers at affordable prices," the government said in a release. The all-India average retail price of onions was 49.30 rupees per kg today, compared with 43.46 rupees per kg a month ago, according to data from the Department of Consumer Affairs.
The government has onion buffer stock of 470,000 tn, higher than 305,000 tn procured last year, according to the release. The targeted sale of retail onions will also be through outlets, e-commerce platforms, and outlets of Kendriya Bhandar in major consumption centres, it said.
"The quantity and disposal channels for onion will be enhanced, deepened, intensified and diversified as per the trend in onion prices," the government said. Price realisation by onion farmers during the 2023-24 rabi season was in the range of 1,230-2,578 rupees per 100 kg, compared with 693-1,205 rupees per 100 kg in the previous year, according to the release.
Additionally, the average buffer procurement price for onion was 2,833 rupees per 100 kg, significantly higher than 1,724 rupees per 100 kg last year. The government said that the outlook for the availability of the bulb vegetable in the coming months remains positive as kharif sowing has seen an increase of 102% till Aug 26 compared with last year. According to data by the Department of Agriculture, 290,000 ha have been covered under kharif onion till Aug 26 against 194,000 ha during the corresponding period a year ago.
Furthermore, about 3.8 mln tn onions are reported to still be in storage with farmers and traders, the government said. It also said that retail disposal of onions has been started in the National Capital Region and Mumbai, and in the next one week agencies will cover Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Raipur, and Bhubaneshwar.
