NEW DELHI – Adani Green Energy Ltd is aiming at over 5GW pumped storage projects in the next five years, Chief Executive Officer Amit Singh said today. These would be hydroelectric energy storage facilities--a configuration of water reservoirs at different elevations that generate power as water discharges from one turbine to another.

India's landscape is conducive to set up pumped storage and so the company aims to leverage on that, Singh said. The company is also focussed on creating infrastructure that can combine solar and wind energy, he said.

Being a pioneer in wind-solar hybrids, Adani Green Energy aims to be the power generator with the lowest cost in the country, Singh said at the BloombergNEF Summit today.

To detect wind movement and develop wind energy, Singh stressed on having a robust weather modelling and forecast infrastructure. "We are seriously taking both short-term and long-term weather patterns to make sure that our investment case is de-risked by a good understanding of weather."

Though solar and wind energy are most highlighted, there is a renewed focus on the nuclear power sector to achieve energy security in India, said NTPC Ltd Chairman & Managing Director Gurdeep Singh, who also spoke at the summit. The government, especially Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has also expressed the same sentiment through her Budget speech, Singh added.

Nuclear energy is expected to form a very significant part of the energy mix for Viksit Bharat, Sitharaman had said in her Budget speech, while announcing the government's support for funding research and development in this sector.

Last year, NTPC signed a joint venture agreement with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd to collaborate and cooperate in the field of development of nuclear power projects to meet its clean energy commitment to achieve the net-zero emission target by 2070.

"We are looking at large-sized nuclear power plants across the country. We are in dialogue with at least four to five states who have a suitable site for that," Singh said. The company is looking at potential sites for these projects in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka.

Singh stressed that along with renewable and nuclear energy, carbon capture, utilisation, and storage are going to be integral in decarbonisation. The carbon capture, utilisation, and storage programme aims to reduce carbon emissions from sources like coal power plants and reuse or store the emissions.

With advancing technologies and new energy options, renewable energy needs to be curtailed to ensure grid stability, he added. End
