NEW DELHI – As Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed today in Singapore, the Ministry of External Affairs said his visit will give a major push to economic ties between the two countries and also boost India's 'Act East' policy. The ministry said that both the countries have "expansive economic engagement" and the visit will give a major push to the economic and technological ties between the two countries.

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Prime Minister Modi received a warm welcome at the airport from the Indian community. Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will host a private dinner for prime minister Modi today, Jaiswal said. He said that the prime minister would receive a ceremonial welcome on Thursday which would be followed by a bilateral meeting between the two prime ministers. Modi will also visit AEM Holdings Ltd's semiconductor facility and hold meetings with Singapore business leaders.

Earlier in the day, prime minister Modi held bilateral talks with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and also witnessed the signing and exchange of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the operation of telemetry, tracking and telecommand station for satellite and launch vehicles.

The two leaders held bilateral talks covering a range of topics including defence, trade and investment, food security, education, energy, space technology, health, capacity building, culture as well as people-to-people exchanges. They agreed to explore collaboration in areas such as fintech, cybersecurity, new and emerging technologies, and renewable energy.

The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues. Both leaders condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and called upon states to repudiate it. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to work closely to further strengthen the Association of Southeast Asian Nations – India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

"Both leaders agreed to further expand bilateral trade and economic ties in areas of mutual interest. They further underlined the importance of regular exchanges and dialogue which should be held through key platforms such as the Joint Trade Committee as well as other relevant bilateral, regional, and multilateral forums," the external affairs ministry said.

Modi's visit to Brunei was the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister and coincided with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. Modi had reached Brunei on Tuesday.  End
