--IMD: India Jun 1-Sep 4 rainfall 786.1 mm, 8% above normal
MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 8.6 mm, 26% above the normal of 6.8 mm, the IMD said. Since Jun 1, India has received 786.1 mm rainfall, 8% above the normal of 727.9 mm for the period, it said.
Two out of the four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers today. Rainfall was 23% below normal at 8.0 mm in east and northeast India and 33% below normal at 5.3 mm in central India. Rainfall was 126% above normal in northwest India at 11.8 mm and 90% above normal in south peninsular India at 9.7 mm today.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rains over Gujarat today. Heavy showers are also expected over Chhattisgarh during the next seven days, the weather agency said.
Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation that lies over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighbourhoods at lower and middle tropospheric levels, very heavy rainfall is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Telangana till Thursday, the weather bureau said. These regions are likely to receive heavy rainfall till Sunday, it said.
The agency also forecast very heavy showers over parts of Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana today, and heavy rainfall over parts of Uttarakhand and Rajasthan till Sunday. Low to moderate flash flood risk is seen over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Uttarakhand on Thursday and Friday during the next 24 hours, the weather department said. Parts of Uttar Pradesh are also likely to experience similar weather conditions till Friday.
Currently, the monsoon trough is active, and its western end is near its normal position, while its eastern end is south of its normal position at mean sea level. It is likely to continue so for the next two to three days, the weather department said.
So far in the season, rainfall has been normal in 17 of the 36 subdivisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in 13, and "deficient" in four subdivisions, it said. Rainfall has been "large excess" in two subdivisions since Jun 1. End
