MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rains over Gujarat today. Heavy showers are also expected over Chhattisgarh during the next seven days, the weather agency said.

Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation that lies over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighbourhoods at lower and middle tropospheric levels, very heavy rainfall is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Telangana till Thursday, the weather bureau said. These regions are likely to receive heavy rainfall till Sunday, it said.

In view of very heavy rainfall over parts of Telangana, the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for multiple districts of the state today, according to the Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad.

An orange alert has been issued today for Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, and Bhadradri Kothagudem districts of Telangana. An orange alert is issued for rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm.

In northeast India, the India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh today, and heavy rainfall over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during the next seven days. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also likely to receive heavy showers till Thursday, the weather bureau said.

The weather department has advised farmers to make provisions for draining out excess water from field crops and horticultural crops in the northeastern region, and some other parts of the country. It has also suggested draining out excess water from rice, castor, cotton, pearl millet, groundnut, sesame and maize fields in Gujarat; and from rice, soybean, red gram, maize, cotton and turmeric in Telangana to prevent water logging. The harvested produce of black gram and green gram should be stored at safer places in Vidarbha, it advised.

In the eastern part of the country, heavy rainfall is likely over Bihar on Thursday and Friday and over Odisha till Sunday, the weather department said.

The agency also forecast very heavy showers over parts of Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana today and heavy rainfall over parts of Uttarakhand and Rajasthan till Sunday. Low to moderate flash flood risk is seen over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Uttarakhand on Thursday and Friday during the next 24 hours, the weather department said. Parts of Uttar Pradesh are also likely to experience similar weather conditions till Friday.

Currently, the monsoon trough is active, and its western end is near its normal position, while its eastern end is south of its normal position at mean sea level. It is likely to continue so for the next two to three days, the weather department said.  End
