Rainfall activity to decline over Gujarat from Wed, says IMD

NEW DELHI – Rainfall activity over Gujarat and adjoining areas such as Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan is likely to decrease from Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department said. It had forecast extremely heavy rainfall over interior parts of Gujarat today, while Saurashtra and Kutch were also expected to receive very heavy rainfall.
The IMD forecasts extremely heavy rainfall over a region when there is a possibility of the particular region receiving 244.5 mm of precipitation or more within a span of 24 hours. Similarly, for very heavy rainfall, precipitation ranges between 124.5 mm and 244.5 mm, according to the IMD.
The weather agency has also forecast very heavy rainfall over interior parts of Gujarat on Wednesday, while parts of the western coast of India are also expected to experience heavy rain for the rest of the week. It has forecast heavy rainfall in certain places in east Rajasthan during the next seven days.
So far in the Jun-Sep monsoon season, interior parts of Gujarat have received 26% above normal rainfall, while Saurashtra and Kutch collectively have got 85% higher-than-normal precipitation, data from the IMD showed.
In southern India, heavy rainfall is only expected over Kerala and Mahe today, and parts of coastal Karnataka during the next four days, the IMD said.
The weather bureau has urged farmers to drain out excess water from field crops and horticulture crops in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Telangana. End
