MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 9.4 mm, 38% above the normal of 6.8 mm, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 777.6 mm rainfall, 8% above the normal of 721.1 mm for the period, it said.
One of the four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers today, while the other three received above normal rain. Rainfall was 35% below normal at 6.1 mm in east and northeast India. It was 63% above normal in northwest India at 8.3 mm and 69% above normal in the central region at 13.3 mm, while rainfall in south peninsular India was 33% above normal at 6.9 mm today.
The department today issued a red alert for the Gujarat region for the second day due to extremely heavy rainfall, it said in a release. It has also issued an orange alert for Saurashtra and Kutch for today. A red alert indicates very heavy rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours, and an orange alert is for heavy rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm.
According to the department's regional Met Centre, Ahmedabad, Chhotaudepur, Narmada, and Surat districts are expected to receive extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall today, and the weather bureau has issued a red alert for these districts. Gujarat region received 820% above normal rainfall today at 65.3 mm, and Saurashtra and Kutch received 40% above normal rain at 4.2 mm, the data showed.
So far in the season, rainfall has been normal in 17 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in 12, and "deficient" in five sub-divisions, it said. Two sub-divisions received "large excess" rainfall. End
