NEW DELHI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today approved a 309-km new railway line project to provide the shortest rail connectivity between two major commercial hubs – Mumbai and Indore, with a total cost of 180.36 bln rupees.

The proposed new line between Indore and Manmad will provide direct connectivity and improve mobility, providing enhanced efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways, Information and Broadcasting and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

The proposed railway line, covering six districts, will provide connectivity to approximately 1,000 villages and about 3 mln population, Vaishnaw said. The project will generate direct employment for about 10 mln man-days during construction and will be completed by 2028-29, he said.

The new line project will have a significant impact on the economy. Vaishnaw said the project will provide direct connectivity to Pithampur Auto Cluster, which houses 90 large units and 700 small and medium industries, from the gateway port of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and other state ports.

It will be an essential route to transport commodities such as agricultural products, fertiliser, containers, iron ore, steel, and cement, the minister said.

"The project will also provide direct connectivity to millet-producing districts of Madhya Pradesh and onion-producing districts of Maharashtra which further facilitates the distribution of the same to northern and southern parts of the country," he said.

The capacity augmentation work will result in additional freight traffic of a magnitude of about 26 mln tn per annum, the minister said.

The government also expects the project to give a boost to tourist footfall in the region. "This will increase the tourist footfall to various tourist or religious places of Ujjain–Indore region, including Sri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple," Vaishnaw said.  End
