India rains 31% above normal today, 8% above normal since Jun 1

--IMD: India Jun 1-Sep 2 rainfall 768.2 mm, 8% above normal 

 

MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 9.1 mm, 31% above the normal of 6.9 mm, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 768.2 mm rainfall, 8% above the normal of 714.3 mm for the period, it said.

 

Two out of four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers today, while the rest received above normal showers. Rainfall was 63% below normal at 3.4 mm in east and northeast India, and 2% below normal in northwest India at 5.2 mm. Rainfall was 68% above normal in the central region at 13.6 mm, while showers in south peninsular India were a whopping 123% above normal at 11.8 mm today.

 

In view of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in central Maharashtra, Gujarat region, and Marathwada for today. It has also issued an orange alert in Konkan, Goa, north interior Karnataka, Vidarbha, Uttarakhand, and west Madhya Pradesh for today.

 

A red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours, while an orange alert denotes very heavy rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm.

 

The weather bureau said there is a low to moderate flash flood risk over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods during the next 24 hours in east Rajasthan, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Gujarat region. Surface runoff and inundation may occur over some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas in the next 24 hours, it said.

 

The depression is likely to move towards the northwest across Vidarbha and weaken into a well-marked low pressure area during the next 12 hours, the department said. Heavy rainfall is very likely over parts of central Maharashtra during the next seven days, it said.

 

The department also said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over parts of north interior Karnataka during the next two days. The weather bureau said very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of east Rajasthan on Saturday.

 

So far in the season, rainfall has been normal in 18 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in 10, and "deficient" in five sub-divisions, it said. Rainfall was "large excess" in three sub-divisions since Jun 1.  End
