Kaynes Semicon gets Centre OK to set up semiconductor unit in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD – The Union Cabinet today approved setting up of a semiconductor unit by Kaynes Semicon Pvt Ltd at Sanand, Gujarat, at a cost of 33 bln rupees, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
The proposed unit will have a capacity of 6 mln chips per day and is being set up under India Semiconductor Mission. India had notified the programme for development of semiconductors and display manufacturing ecosystem in 2021, with a total outlay of 760 bln rupees. The minister today said the programme is crucial for the domestic industry for at least 10 years. He said that its outlay would be increased "for sure".
On Feb 29, the Centre approved setting up three semiconductor units in the country. One of the units was a 910-bln-rupee semiconductor fab, or fabrication facility, by Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp of Taiwan at Dholera in Gujarat. The unit is expected to have a capacity of 50,000 wafers per month. Sharing an update on the project, the minister said that the design work for this plant is at an advanced stage.
The other plant is by CG Power, in partnership with Renesas Electronics corp, Japan, and Stars Microelectronics, Thailand. CG Power is setting up a semiconductor unit in Sanand at a cost of 76 bln rupees and will make chips for consumer, industrial, automotive and power applications.
The third unit is by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd that has begun construction to set up a semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam, at a cost of 270 bln rupees. This plant would have a capacity to produce 48 mln chips per day.
Meanwhile, the minister said that the work on the 225-bln-rupee semiconductor fabrication plant at Sanand, the first to be proposed by American chipmaker Micron Technology, is on schedule. This unit is likely to produce country's first semiconductor chip by mid of the next year, he said. End
