NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet today approved an outlay of 139.66 bln rupees for seven programmes aiming to strengthen agricultural infrastructure and boost farmers' income. The highest allocation of 39.79 bln rupees was for improving crop science for food and nutritional security. The programme will prepare farmers for climate resilience and achieve food security in oilseed and pulses by 2047.
The cabinet approved 28.17 bln rupees for the digital agriculture mission. The programme aims to digitise village land maps, crop sowing, drought, and flood data. It also seeks to digitally estimate crops and yields by tracking water and weather data, using artificial intelligence. The mission also aims to bring information to farmers on mobile phones and connect them with buyers. The digital mission has provisions for soil profiling and modelling crop yields and insurance.
To enhance agricultural education, management, and social sciences, the Cabinet approved 22.91 bln rupees. In line with New Education Policy 2020, the programme aims to prepare agricultural students and researchers for current challenges. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research would spearhead modernising agricultural research and education using the latest technologies. The Union Budget for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) had allocated 1.52 trln rupees to develop agriculture and allied sectors.
To increase farmers' income from livestock and dairy, the Cabinet approved an outlay of 17.02 bln rupees for the sustainable livestock health and production programme. It comprises animal genetic resource management and production. To improve farmers' earnings from horticulture plants, an outlay of 8.60 bln rupees has been approved. Plantation, spices, medicinal, root, tuber, bulbous, and aromatic plants are some horticultural crops in focus. Other Cabinet decisions include strengthening Krishi Vigyan Kendra with 12.02 bln rupees and natural resource management with 11.15 bln rupees. End
