Poll panel alters Haryana polling date to Oct 5, results on Oct 8

NEW DELHI – The Election Commission of India today altered the polling date for the Haryana Assembly elections to Oct 5 from the earlier scheduled Oct 1. It also changed the date of counting for both the Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana Assembly polls to Oct 8.
On Aug 16, the poll panel had announced the schedule for Assembly elections for Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana – polling in Jammu & Kashmir was to be held in three phases on Sep 18, and 25 and Oct 1, with the results to be announced on Oct 4, while polling in Haryana was scheduled for Oct 1, with the results also on Oct 4.
However, a cross-section of the political fraternity, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, made representations, seeking a change in the Haryana Assembly election date, saying an extended holiday weekend coinciding with the polling date could impact voter turnout. The poll panel today said it had "considered these representations, (and) has decided to change the date of poll only for Haryana from 1st October, 2024 (Tuesday) to 5th October, 2024 (Saturday)".
In a release, the panel said, "...representations have been received from national political parties, state political party and All India Bishnoi Mahasabha regarding mass movement of the people of the Bishnoi community of Haryana to Rajasthan to participate in centuries old Asoj Amavasya festival celebration. It may deny voting rights to a large number of people and may lead to reduce voters' participation in the general election to the legislative Assembly of Haryana". End
