MUMBAI – In September, rainfall is likely to be above normal in most parts of India at over 109% of the long period average, the India Meterological Department said today. However, some parts of extreme north India, south peninsular India, and most parts of northeast are likely to receive below-normal rainfall, the department said in its monthly forecast for September.

The long period average for rainfall over the country during September is about 167.9 mm, based on historical data from 1971 to 2020, the weather bureau said.

The forecast indicates a higher likelihood of La Nina conditions developing during the end of the monsoon season, it said, adding that there is a 66% chance of La Nina during Sep-Nov. In its forecast for August, the weather bureau had predicted La Nina conditions to set in by the end of August.

"At present, neutral Indian Ocean Dipole conditions are prevailing over the Indian Ocean. Most global climate models suggest that neutral Indian Ocean Dipole conditions are likely to continue during the remaining period of the monsoon season," it said. The weather bureau has also said that currently, El Nino-Southern Oscillation conditions are neutral over the equatorial Pacific.

The La Nina weather phenomenon will set in after a year of El Nino conditions over India. While the La Nina brings good rainfall to India, the El Nino is associated with a hotter and drier climate over the country.

The weather bureau has also predicted above-normal maximum temperatures over most parts of India, except for some areas in northwest India, south peninsular India, and some pockets of east-central India, in September. In these regions, normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are likely, it said. "Above-normal minimum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country, except for some isolated pockets of northwest India, foothills of Himalayas and south Peninsular India, where normal to below normal minimum temperatures are likely during September," it said.

Rainfall activity in August was the fifth highest since 2005 – 16?ove normal at 287.1 mm, the department said. In August, east and northeast India received 3?ove normal showers at 332.6 mm, while rainfall in northwest was 32?ove normal at 253.9 mm. Precipitation in central India was 18?ove normal at 354.4 mm and that in south peninsula was 1?ove normal at 186.8 mm, in August, the department said.

So far this southwest monsoon season, the country has received 7?ove normal rainfall at 749.0 mm, against the normal of 700.7 mm, according to the weather bureau. The southwest monsoon hit the coast of Kerala two days ahead of the normal onset date of Jun 1.  End
