NEW DELHI – The government's expenditure on major subsidies in Apr-Jul fell 10.9% on year to 1.256 trln rupees, data from the Controller General of Accounts showed. This was due to a sharp on-year fall in fertiliser subsidy, and a slowdown in the pace of food subsidy outlay.

The expenditure accounted for 33% of the Budget estimate of 3.812 trln rupees for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), compared to 38% in the same period of the last financial year.

The expenditure on fertiliser subsidies was down 40.0% on year at 432.15 bln rupees in Apr-Jul. The food subsidy bill was 788.97 bln rupees, up 15.2% against Apr-Jul a year ago. Food subsidy spending had grown at a pace of nearly 50% in the first three months of the current financial year.

Petroleum subsidy grew over seven times from the same period a year ago, but the absolute number remained within budgeted outlays.
