MUMBAI – The government has fixed the rice procurement target for the 2024-25 kharif marketing season which starts from October at 48.5 mln tn, the ministry of consumer affairs said in a release today. In the current 2023-24 kharif marketing season, the government has procured 46.3 mln tn of rice.

 

The Department of Food and Public Distribution today held a meeting with state food secretaries and Food Corp of India to discuss arrangements for procurement of crops in the ensuing Kharif Marketing Season 2024-25. Various factors impacting procurement such as weather forecasts, and production estimates were reviewed during the meeting. It was attended by the principal secretary, secretary of states, and union territories as well as officers from FCI, India Meteorological Department and the Department of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare.

 

The government has also set a target to procure 1.9 mln tn of coarse grains during the kharif marketing season 2024-25. This target is higher than 660,000 tn set for the 2022-23 kharif marketing season. "States and union territories are advised to focus on procurement of millets for diversification of crops and enhanced nutrition in dietary patterns," the release said. End
