Bengal governor meets Amit Shah as protests over rape-murder go on

NEW DELHI – Amidst the ongoing protests following the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose today met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi and apprised him about the law-and-order situation in the state.
According to sources, the governor met Shah at his residence and gave him details of the rape and murder at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. However, the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Governor's house did not release any information about the meeting till the filing of this report.
A nation-wide agitation erupted over the junior doctor’s rape and murder with protestors demanding swift action. On Tuesday, protestors clashed with police while marching towards the state secretariat in Kolkata to press for Banerjee's resignation. The protestors were seen breaking through barricades. To douse the agitation, the police resorted to a baton charge, tear gas shells, and water cannons.
The incident has also intensified the political tussle in the state with the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing each other of disturbing law and order in Kolkata.
The 31-year-old junior doctor was found dead at a seminar hall at the medical college and hospital on Aug 9. The West Bengal police arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the case. There have been protests and strikes by doctors in several cities in the country over the case. On Aug 13, the Calcutta High Court transferred the probe into the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Taking suo motu cognisance of the rape and murder of the junior doctor, the Supreme Court on Aug 20 formed a national task force to make recommendations on the safety and working conditions of medical professionals. End
