NEW DELHI – Former Jharkhand chief minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Champai Soren today joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in Ranchi. Soren joined the BJP in the presence of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
"Today, I joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, expressing faith in the leadership of respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and National President J.P. Nadda," he said in a post on X, formerly twitter, after joining the BJP.
Soren had quit the JMM on Wednesday, stating that the "present style of functioning and policies" forced him to quit the party which he served for many years. He had also resigned from the post of state cabinet minister and assembly member.
"Today I resigned from the primary membership and all posts of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. I will continue to fight on the issues of the tribals, Dalits, backward and common people of Jharkhand. I have never ever imagined in my dreams that I would quit JMM, a party which is like a family to me...The turn of events of the past forced me to take this decision with much pain...I am pained to say that the party has deviated from its principles," he had said in his resignation letter.
On Jul 3, Soren had tendered his resignation as the chief minister of Jharkhand after a meeting of Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance leaders and legislators unanimously elected Hemant Soren as JMM legislature party leader. Champai Soren became the chief minister of the state on Feb 2 shortly after Hemant Soren resigned from the post following his arrest in a land scam case. Hemant Soren got bail on Jun 8 from the Jharkhand High Court, which said that "there exist reasons to believe that he was not guilty of the offence".
With the state assembly elections likely in Nov-Dec this year, the BJP hopes to dent the scheduled tribe vote bank of the JMM-led alliance. Champai Soren's entry into the saffron belt would increase the BJP's chances of returning to power in the state. End
