--IMD: India Aug 30 rainfall 8.1 mm, 13% above normal 

--IMD: India Jun 1-Aug 30 rainfall 742.1 mm, 7% above normal 

MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 8.1 mm, 13% above the normal of 7.1 mm, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 742.1 mm rainfall, 7% above the normal of 693.9 mm for the period, it said.

Three out of four homogeneous regions in the country received above normal showers today. Rainfall was 68% above normal at 6.9 mm in northwest India, and 81% above normal in south peninsula India at 9.4 mm. Rainfall was 9% above normal in the central region at 10.8 mm, while showers in east and northeast India were 68% below normal at 2.9 mm today.

The deep depression over Saurashtra and Kutch, which intensified into a cyclonic storm today, is likely to move to northeast Arabian Sea away from the Indian coast in the next two days, the bureau said. Gujarat has received heavy rainfall over the last one week. The region has received 471% above normal rainfall at 46.3 mm today, according to the data.   

A red alert has been issued for today in Malkangiri, Koraput, and Gajapati districts in Odisha due to extremely heavy rainfall under the influence of a low pressure area formed over the central and adjoining northern Bay of Bengal, according to IMD's regional Met Centre, Bhubaneswar. 

So far in the season, rainfall has been normal in 19 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in nine, and "deficient" in five sub-divisions, it said. Rainfall was "large excess" in three sub-divisions since Jun 1.  End
