NEW DELHI – A well-marked low-pressure area over the central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall over Odisha till Sunday, the India Meteorological Department said. Adjoining areas such as coastal Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and Telangana will also witness very heavy rainfall in the same period, the IMD said.
This low-pressure area is likely to move west-northwestwards towards north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts and intensify into a depression during the next 36 hours, the bureau said. Farmers in south Odisha have been advised to drain water from maize, groundnut, ragi, vegetables, niger and banana fields.
The deep depression over Saurashtra and Kutch, which intensified into a cyclonic storm today, is likely to move to northeast Arabian Sea away from the Indian coast in the next two days, the bureau said. Gujarat has received heavy rainfall over the last one week.
Parts of northeastern states such as Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura are also expected to see heavy rains till Tuesday. The bureau has advised farmers to drain excess water from standing crop fields and fruit orchards to avoid water stagnation. "Due to prolonged heavy rainfall, transplanted 'aman' rice and vegetable crops in low-lying areas of Tripura are submerged, with young rice seedlings unlikely to recover," the IMD said.
Heavy rainfall is also very likely over Kerala and Mahe, coastal Karnataka during the next seven days. Similarly, parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana are expected to receive heavy rain on Monday, Uttarakhand between Monday and Wednesday, and Uttar Pradesh till Tuesday. East Rajasthan will be lashed by heavy rain next week, the bureau said. End
