NEW DELHI – The International Sugar Organization today projected the global sugar deficit in the new season starting October at 3.58 mln tn, sharply higher than the revised 200,000 tn in 2023-24 (Oct-Sep).
In its quarterly market outlook, the organisation sharply cut its forecast for the global sugar deficit in 2023-24 to 200,000 tn from 2.95 mln tn estimated earlier. "This reduction is primarily due to revised national production estimates, particularly from southern hemisphere producers, and higher-than-expected consumption growth," the intergovernmental body said.
Global sugar production in 2024-25 is now estimated at 179.29 mln tn, down from 181.26 mln tn estimated for the previous sugar season. "The most significant regional change is in South America, particularly in CS (centre-south) Brazil, where good harvest progress has shifted more sugar output into the pre-October window," the organisation said. This intra-seasonal shift results in a 2.99 mln tn decline in Brazil’s output, which is the main driver for the projected decline in production in 2024-25, it said.
The organisation has scaled up its global consumption estimate to 182.9 mln tn for the upcoming sugar season, compared with 181.46 mln tn projected for 2023-24.
The availability of sugar for global export is estimated at 64.47 mln tn for 2024-25. The agency expects global exports at 68.56 mln tn for the current sugar season ending in September. Import demand in 2024-25 is projected at 65.54 mln tn, down from 68.29 mln tn in the current season. Ending stocks in 2024-25 are seen at 96.13 mln tn, down from 98.64 mln tn in the previous year.
ETHANOL
The estimate for global ethanol production in 2024 has been scaled up to 117.99 bln ltr from 115.7 bln ltr in 2023. "Major revisions from the ISO’s previous report include an increase in output in India, Brazil, and the US, all due to greater grains-based ethanol production," the organisation said.
Meanwhile, ethanol consumption in 2024 is projected to rise to 113.5 bln ltr from 108.1 bln ltr last year due to increased demand from Brazil and India. "In India, record production and consumption have been achieved so far this year, with monthly blend rates since May exceeding this year’s 15% target," it said. "Grains-based ethanol production has risen significantly and has been crucial to offsetting reduced ethanol production from cane/molasses," it said. End
