MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 8.4 mm, 15% above the normal of 7.3 mm, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 734.1 mm of rainfall, 7% above the normal of 686.8 mm for the period, it said.
Two out of the four homogeneous regions in the country received below-normal showers. Rainfall was 67% below normal at 3.0 mm in east and northeast India, and 3% below normal in south peninsular India at 5.0 mm. Rainfall was 51% above normal in the central region at 15.6 mm. Northwest India received 30% above normal rain at 5.6 mm today.
A deep depression over Saurashtra and Kutch is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm on Friday, the weather agency said. Under the influence of this cyclonic storm, wind speeds could reach a top speed of 65 kmph over districts of south Gujarat, Saurashtra, and Kutch today and on Friday, it said. Moreover, strong winds with a maximum speed of 60 kmph are likely to prevail along and off the northern Maharashtra coast till Saturday, it added.
The agency said heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Saurashtra and Kutch today, and similar weather conditions are expected to prevail during the next two days.
Odisha is expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall during the next 2-3 days under the influence of a deep depression that is likely to develop over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during the weekend, the India Meterological Department said in a release.
The weather bureau has issued an orange alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Odisha today. It has also issued an orange alert in Kerala, coastal Karnataka, and south interior Karnataka for today.
So far in the season, rainfall has been normal in 19 of the 36 subdivisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in nine, and "deficient" in five subdivisions, it said. Rainfall was "large excess" in three subdivisions since Jun 1. End
