MUMBAI – Odisha is expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall during the next two to three days under the influence of a deep depression that is likely to develop over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during the weekend, the India Meterological Department said in a release.
The weather bureau has issued an orange alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Odisha today. It has also issued an orange alert in Kerala, coastal Karnataka, and south interior Karnataka for today.
A red alert indicates very heavy rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours, and an orange alert is for heavy rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm. So far during the southwest monsoon, Odisha received 10% below normal showers at 804.2 mm, while today the state has received 36% above normal showers at 16.6 mm, according to the weather agency.
The weather department said extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Mahe during the next two-three days. It has also predicted very heavy rainfall over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, and Telangana during the same period.
The department has suggested farmers drain excess water from maize, groundnut, ragi, vegetables, niger, and banana in south Odisha. It has also asked the farmers in Odisha, Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, Kerala, and Karnataka to drain excess water from fields and horticultural crops. "Make provision for draining out excess water from standing crop fields and fruit orchards to avoid water stagnation in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha," it said.
The department advised fishermen not to venture into the northeast and adjoining eastcentral Arabian Sea, along and off Gujarat, and adjoining Pakistan and north Maharashtra coasts till Friday. So far during the southwest monsoon, the country has received 7% above normal showers, at 734.1 mm, according to the weather department. End
