MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for exceptionally heavy rainfall in Saurashtra and Kutch till Thursday. The weather bureau has issued an orange alert for very heavy to extremely heavy showers in the Gujarat region, Uttarakhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, IMD said in a release.

A red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours, and an orange alert denotes very heavy rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm.

In view of the extreme rainfall that is forecast over Saurashtra and Kutch till Thursday, the department said there is a risk of moderate flash floods over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods during the next 24 hours. Surface runoff or inundation is very likely in some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas during the next 24 hours, it said. The department has also advised farmers in these regions to drain excess water from field crops and horticultural crops.

During the next 24 hours, a fresh low pressure area is likely to form over the north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, IMD said. It is likely to move towards the west and northwest close to south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts during the next two days.

Moving to the southern part, the IMD said extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Telangana during the weekend and similar weather conditions are also likely over parts of Odisha on Friday. During the week, very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, costal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Telangana, IMD said.

Very heavy rainfall is also very likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands today, IMD said. Chhattisgarh, Konkan and Goa are also very likely to receive very heavy rainfall during the week, it said.

In the past 24 hours, Saurashtra and Kutch received exceptionally heavy rainfall, according to IMD. Heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded over parts of Uttarakhand, east Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, central Maharashtra, and Tripura, it said.  End
